No es culpa del tio Julio - It's not Julio's fault

It's not Julio's fault

Going to the celebration of the Independence Day of the US on July 4 in a new place every year, has been a fun and even interesting challenge for those of us who form a migrant minority in this country.
My first experience celebrating this date was at Orlando's Eola Park, right in the city downtown. That summer of 2013 the fireworks started at the stipulated time and lasted about thirty continuous minutes ... spectacular.
Every year we venture to look for new places to see the celebration of the US patriotic date, in order to live a new experience every year.
However, in our limited environment, the Central Florida region had been running out of new options to see the celebration of the date. However, there were still new attractions and events that we had never attended, outside of the city's major celebrations and theme parks.
This summer, wanting to avoid the tumults and the traffic, we wanted to see the announced fireworks from the "Eye of Orlando" the great mechanical wheel, recently opened as one attraction of the great complex located on the International Drive next to the Aquarium and the wax museum Madame Tussauds.
Today, at 8:45 p.m. a narrator announces on the closed circuit of the complex to the spectators, to take a seat to witness the announced spectacle. Ninety seconds later, that was all: squalid fireworks that barely suggested the anticipation of something better or spectacular ... but nothing happened. To make matters worse, in the long pause (about 4 minutes) after 90 seconds of fireworks without or more, a torrential downpour was uncovered that forced us to shelter from the rain in the surrounding businesses.
Waiting in the rain, under the umbrellas of the restaurant "Uncle Julio's" the employees invited us to go ahead and look for a place in their bar to wait while the downpour goes by. In effect we did that. I found several empty spaces in the bar and sat my large Hispanic family in that bar. The place was crowded, however, that space in the bar was empty and I took advantage of it. Immediately, I asked the white american bartender, in perfect English, that if they accept a form of payment through Samsung Pay (since I do not usually carry on my plastic for security reasons and the convenience of having this form of payment); the bartender responds, among giggling: "Sorry, we do not have Samsung pay, in this restaurant, they are not so technological" to which I respond "oh! Mam, I do not have my wallet with me "to which she responds to me laughing" you're in trouble "and I tell her" are you sure they do not accept Samsung pay? " To which she replies with more laughter: "No! If you do not pay you will have to wash the dishes for it " retiring with laughter and leaving me with the desire to order drinks and meals for my family.
Immediately I got up from the chair at the bar, outraged by the comment, and headed towards the host station, demanding the attention of a supervisor or a manager. At first, a host approached me to try to calm me down and disorient my complaint. I firmly maintained my disagreement and waited until a couple of responsible people appeared, asking me for an explanation of what had happened. I explained to them and I let them know that besides being a joke in bad taste, I as a minority, I felt extremely offended by the demeaning attitude of the bartender, who did not see in me a client but someone without capacity of payment, perhaps because of the simple fact that in my group we all came speaking Spanish or because of the appearance or the question about my payment method.
Discrimination comes in many forms and modalities. Whether for your technological ability, your skin color, your ethnicity or race, there will always be someone who will find reasons to want to express their personal frustrations towards those who pose a threat to their status and lifestyle, for the simple fact of being different . Keep in mind that as long as freedom of expression and the rule of law continue to exist, nothing can undermine the sacred human and personal rights that this country embodies in its constitution and in the laws.
